Experience the Overview Effect right here on Earth!

Create your own 1:2 million scale representation of the thickness of the Atmosphere relative to the size of the Earth with this printed gummed tape!

All you need is a large space like a playground, and a rope 3.2m long for measuring.

Why?

If you look up, the sky looks very big doesn’t it ?  It is all about point of view:

Astronauts describe seeing the Earth from Space as Life-changing.
The spectacle of seeing the Earth suspended in space was so overwhelming for Edgar Mitchell
that the Apollo 14 astronaut and 6th man on the moon wanted to grab politicians by the scruff
of the neck and drag them into space to witness the view.

Instructions for an ‘Overview Effect’ or ‘Out of Earth’ Experience:
Find a big space like a playground, sports court, public square or carpark, and with permission,
make your own Earth use water to stick down a circle 6.4m wide.
Use a string 3.2m long with someone holding it in the centre to help make the circle the right size.

Discussions and Exercises:
How thick does the atmosphere look now?  Where does our pollution go?  How vulnerable are we?
You could try making objects to represent large quantities of waste at this scale e.g. how much CO2?
For example the volume of the Antarctic Ice Sheet is equivalent to a wheel barrow full of water
Or you could even walk 192m away and draw another circle 1.75m wide for a trip to the MOON
